Leslie Browne is an American-born painter based in Amsterdam. She was trained in the United States and the Netherlands, studying at the University of California, Los Angeles; California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland; Santa Barbara Art Institute; Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles; and later at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. Since the 1970s, Browne has developed a sustained painting practice situated between American and European contexts, with an early focus on the visual culture of the United States and its social structures. Her work critically reflects on the American middle class and the imagery of mass media from the position of distance and observation.

Browne’s paintings draw on film, television, and popular media, translated into carefully constructed surfaces defined by layered transparency and the absence of visible brushwork. Her practice investigates the relationship between image and perception, and the ways in which mediated visual culture shapes memory and identity. She has exhibited widely in Europe, the United States, and Australia, with solo exhibitions at institutions and galleries including Suzanne Biederberg Gallery (Amsterdam), Het Domein Museum (Sittard), SoGe Gallery (Los Angeles), Arteria (Groningen), and Hotel Arena (Amsterdam), and participated in group exhibitions at venues such as the Jewish Historical Museum (Amsterdam), Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam), the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, KunstRAI Amsterdam, and Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (Santa Ana). Browne has received multiple grants from the Dutch National Fund for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture, and was awarded a municipal acquisition by the City of Amsterdam.
